Bengali Folk Dances

Bharatanatyam

Mohiniattam
Mohiniattam literally means "the dance of the enchantress." This rarely seen dance form is nourished by women alone and is especially languorous and curvacious, gentle and constantly fluid. One is reminded of the gentle people and surroundings of the coastal state of Kerala.

Bharatanatyam
Bharatanatyam, on the other hand, is geometry in motion - the arms, legs, and torso form an array of vivacious shapes and lines, ideally depicting sculpturesque freezes, reflections on the ritualistic temple culture of Tamil Nadu.

Bengali Folk Dances
Bengali folk dances are perfomed in both India and Bangladesh. They portray the lives of the village folk, fishermen & women, tribals, and pertain to more earthly matters. The sorrows of natural catastrophes and separated lovers are described, alongside the joys of romance and community gatherings at fairs & celebrations. Bengali dances are graceful and lightfooted.

"O, divine dancer, abandon your dance of destruction and move to the rhythm of creation.."
Bengali Poet Nazrul
